Dining Guide - San Francisco
By Jonathan Durrell
Best Dining Bets by the Bay
When you mention the name "San Francisco", some people think of cable cars, fog or the Golden Gate Bridge. But for serious foodies, the City by the Bay conjures up hefty Dungeness crabs and memorable meals by some of the country’s best chefs. This is one of the world’s great cities for dining out - a fact attested by the Yellow Pages restaurant listings, which categorize everything from Afghan to Vietnamese, with detours to Basque, Thai and Persian.
Here’s one of our favorites, most conveniently located downtown. Dinner-for-two prices include appetizers, entrees and desserts; tax, tips and drinks are extra.
If Kubla Kahn did a Chinese restaurant decree, chances are it would look like Tommy Toy’s, located across from the Transamerica Pyramid.
Inspired by the library of the Empress Dowager of the Chung Dynasty, furnishings include waist-tall vases, silk embroideries and various figurines and antiquities tucked in niches along the corridors. The menu blends Chinese, French and California influences for truly haute cuisine. To get a sense of the culinary prowess, opt for their prix-fixe dinner($49 per person.) From minced squab and seafood bisque, the meal progresses to an entourage of succulent entrees: shelled Maine lobster in peppercorn sauce, Peking duck with lotus buns, wok-charred medallion of beef with garlic and wine. Finish off with peach mousse on a strawberry compote. A la carte dinner for two will run $70 to $80 per couple.
